On 26 April 2026, the maritime world celebrated 70 years since the SS Ideal X completed the first successful sea container shipment from Port Newark to Port Houston. Originally conceived by Malcolm McLean to bridge the gap between road and sea transport, the shipping container has since revolutionised global trade and logistics. Port Houston marked this historic milestone to recognise a breakthrough that fundamentally reshaped international transportation.
Ramsgate Royal Harbour celebrated the 86th anniversary of Operation Dynamo. It was at this site that the Dunkirk ‘Little Ships’ were assembled prior to the most significant colaboration between Naval and Civilian Vessels in history. Operation Dynamo has become legendary for the pluck of these crews in helping to ferry troops stranded at the Dunkirk beaches from shore to ships. 850 civilian craft took part and over a quarter never returned. Heather Dennett and Kevin Finn of the Association of Dunkirk Little Ships joined the Mayor of Ramsgate Rauhsan Ara and the yearly celebrants in helping mark this World Origin Site. Southampton Airport has been marked as a World Origin Site for the World’s First flight of the Spitfire 90 years ago. Spitfire 90 was a full day of activities around the city at sights linked to this iconic aircraft. Two Spitfires landed at the airport on the same runway used for the first test flight in 1936. Guests included Public Service Broadcasting’s founder J. Willgoose Esq. who unveiled the World Origin Site plaque. Our team also created a Augmented Reality version of the National Spitfire Memorial for guests visiting the future site of this epic sculpture.
Landau Marine at Supermarine Quay, Southampton has been accredited as a World Origin Site for the place where the first Spitfire came off the production line in 1938. The team at Supermarine had established their ability to design and build fast planes during the era of R.J.Mitchell’s world beating Schneider Trophy seaplanes and went on to create the Spitfire. Landau Marine have celebrated this heritage and unveiled the plaque at a special open day featuring expert talks and a demonstration Merlin engine.
On February 25, 2026, a unique bronze World Origin Site plaque arrived at Cape Adare, Antarctica, aboard the Heritage Adventurer. Presented at Borchgrevink’s hut by Heritage Expeditions guide and former Antarctic Heritage Trust Conservation Programme Manager Al Fastier, the marker commemorates the 127th anniversary of the 1899 Southern Cross expedition, the first human habitation on the continent. This collaboration between World Origin Site .Org, Heritage Expeditions, and the Antarctic Heritage Trust honours Carsten Borchgrevink’s historic legacy and his team’s incredible world first.
A historic celebration took place on January 26th, 2026, marking the “TV100” event in London. Crowds gathered at Bar Italia in Soho to commemorate exactly 100 years since John Logie Baird first demonstrated television in that very location in 1926. Over 160 people attended the afternoon event to honor this milestone in broadcasting history.
250 years ago on the 6th of July 1775 the Duke of Cumberland advertised in the Public Advertiser for participants to take part in a race for Pleasure Sailing Boats from Westminster Bridge to Putney Bridge and back. This race took place on the 13th of July 1775 and marks the first time that an organised open invitation yacht race took place. This race also marks the origins of the Royal Thames Yacht Club which was then known as The Cumberland Fleet. A suitable location for a World Origin Site plaque along the route is being sought.
The BBC’s former flagship Television Centre has been accredited as a World Origin Site for being The World’s First Purpose Built Television Production Facility having been announced in April 1949 following the BBC’s purchase of the site in Wood Lane. The design by Graham Dawbarn was driven by the process of television production which created a distinctive London landmark.
This accreditation was supported by Sir David Attenborough.
Lincoln City Centre was brought to a halt on the 9th of September 2025 as the White Hart Hotel became the focal point for the unveiling of two World Origin Site plaques to celebrate the 110th anniversary of the Invention of The Tank.
The Tank’s creators Tritton, Rigby and Wilson met in secret at the White Hart during September 1915 and came up with designs for the tracked fighting vehicle that would change the face and pace of warfare forever. The room is now known as The Tank Room.
TV Presenter and TT Racer Guy Martin unveiled the plaques and was reunited with Deborah II the replica WWI Tank built for his programme Guy Martin’s WWI Tank on Chanel 4. The event gained substantial local and national media coverage as well as being a great hit for children seeing a tank first hand during their morning school run.
The National Physical laboratory was set up 125 years ago. It has gone on to nurture an incredible array of scientists and researchers with some world changing inventions to their names. On the 13th of September there will be no fewer than FOUR World Origin Site plaques on display before they are put up permanently. The Stockton & Darlington Railway is the Birthplace of the Modern Railway and celebrated with two World Origin Site plaques to mark the start and finish of this first historic rail journey taken by George Stephenson in 1825 aboard Locomotion No1. Both venues have been restored and feature plaques from the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and World Origin Site .Org ensuring that their role in the making of the modern world is remembered for generations to come. Michael Portillo kindly commented : “I’m sure you feel – as I do – a sense of privilege celebrating these great people and events.”
This year is the 180th year of Fuller’s making beer by the Thames. Celebrating the birthplace of this iconic British beer brand World Origin Site have issued a plaque to celebrate where it all began and more importantly where it is still being brewed at the Griffin Brewery in Chiswick, west London. Now a global beer brand with its roots firmly in London Fuller’s has created a specific pale ale to mark the occasion and will be erecting the plaque in ‘pride’ of place very soon.
Murdoch House in Redruth was accredited as a World Origin Site on the 7th of June as the Word’s First Building Lit by Gas in 1792. Murdoch may well have known of the Dutch academic Jean-Pierre Minckeler’s work on the extraction of gas from coal which he used to light a lecture theatre at Leuven University around 1785. Murdoch produced his own coal gas and used this to light his house. Murdoch’s leap was to scale this up to light an entire factory which prolonged working hours, accelerating the Industrial Revolution. His pioneering work is seen as the origin of gas illumination that spread from Redruth to light the world.
Terry Gilliam and Sir Michael Palin gathered with friends and a Circus of fans to mark the World Origin Site of Monty Python at a humble curry restaurant in Hampstead, North London. The Light of Kashmir, now Aroma Spice is where the team met for a curry in May 1969. Sir Micheal Palin said “We all came up here from my house which was the first time Python got around a table anywhere and we came here to the Light Of Kashmir as it was then. All I remember was arguments over the bill! John didn’t want to pay and Eric wanted to pay in dollars, so in the end we all just ran away.” Terry Gilliam remarked as soon as the plaque was unveiled “We’re famous Michael, we’re famous.”
Few visitors to Las Vegas consider where the city began, but the original site still stands at the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort. In April 2025, World Origin Site .Org officially accredited the fort as the recognized origin point of the city. Chris Reynolds from our team presented the World Origin Site certificate during a special visit. The award was received by Sherri Cassel, who works at the fort and plays a key role in preserving its history. This recognition highlights the fort’s historic importance as the foundation of Las Vegas.
17 Gough Square is where Samuel Johnson and his assistants compiled The World’s First Comprehensive English Dictionary published on the 15th of April 1755. This may be one of the most influential World Firsts we have ever had the privilege of marking. Without this exemplary work many of the other Inventions, Discoveries and World Firsts we celebrate may never have been so well defined nor shared with others with such precise definition and clarity.
The aptly named Heart of Cape Town Museum at the Groote Schuur Hospital takes visitors on a journey commemorating The World’s First Human Heart Transplant by Dr. Christiaan Barnard in 1967. With the advances in modern science we can take such operations for granted and the public’s recognition of the world’s first operation can fade. The museum team have been rightly proud of their new status as an Accredited World Origin Site and we wish them well in keeping this important site up and running for future generations to appreciate and be inspired by.
Brooklands will be marking their 120th year in 2027 and will celebrate by unveiling a World Origin Site plaque for the World’s First Purpose Built Motor Racing Circuit. Before that will be plaques for the World’s First Ground to Air Communication, successfully transmitted 110 years ago in 1915 and the World’s First Airline Ticket Office from 1911 when you could be some of the first paying passengers to sample a test flight around the Surrey skies.
Dr. Ludwig Guttmann revolutionised spinal injury rehabilitation after WWII, recognising the benefits of competitive exercise. At Stoke Mandeville Hospital in the UK, he organised an archery competition for wheelchair patients, leading to the first Stoke Mandeville Games in 1948, held in parallel to the London Olympics. The event grew annually, culminating in the first official Paralympic Games in Rome in 1960. The National Paralympic Heritage Trust, based at Stoke Mandeville Stadium, preserves this legacy, and the stadium remains the starting point for the Paralympic flame relay. World Origin Site .Org will produce two accreditation plaques, including a trial Braille version.
The National Museum of Computing at Bletchley Park celebrated 80 years of the Colossus computers. The museum’s reconstructed Colossus is running in the very hut where unit No9 was operational in 1944. These were the World’s First Electronic Digital Computers but were kept top secret for 30 years. Jacqui Garrad, Dr Andrew Herbert OBE, Alan Bealby of PORF and over 70 guests came to see the refurbished museum and the unveiling of World Origin Site plaque 0039 to Accredit this landmark moment in computer development.
Jacaranda Plaque Unveiling – 23rd August 2024
An estimated 300 people filled the Jacaranda Club and outside on Slater Street in Liverpool to see the unveiling of the World Origin Site plaque 0022 marking the first performance of The Beatles. Guests included Holly Johnson of Frankie Goes to Hollywood plus the Zutons performing live together with friends and family of the band and of their original manager Allan Williams. The plaque is set to become an important new landmark for fans visiting the city where the biggest band in the history of popular music began 64 years ago.
