On 26 January 1926, Baird gave the first public demonstration of true television images for members of the Royal Institution and a reporter from The Times in his laboratory at 22 Frith Street in the Soho district of London. Baird initially used a scan rate of 5 pictures per second, improving this to 12.5 pictures per second. It was the first demonstration of a television system that could scan and display live moving images with tonal graduation.

A historic celebration took place on January 26th, 2026, marking the “TV100” event in London. Crowds gathered at Bar Italia in Soho to commemorate exactly 100 years since John Logie Baird first demonstrated television in that very location in 1926. Over 160 people attended the afternoon event to honor this milestone in broadcasting history.

The gathering featured several famous stars of television who came to celebrate the event. A notable guest of honor was Iain Baird, the grandson of John Logie Baird, who attended to celebrate his grandfather’s pioneering legacy and unveil the plaque at this World Origin Site.
