DETAILS:
In 1935, the first practical demonstration of radar technology took place under the guidance of Sir Robert Watson-Watt, a pioneering scientist at NPL. This breakthrough showed how radio waves could be used to detect aircraft, marking the beginning of a technology that would prove vital to Britain’s defense during the Second World War. The success of this demonstration led directly to the creation of the Chain Home radar network, which provided the Royal Air Force with an essential advantage during the Battle of Britain. NPL’s work on radar is recognized as one of the laboratory’s most important contributions to modern science and national security.
