On the 28th of December 1895 the Lumière brothers set up their projection equipment in a room at the Grand Café in Paris and presented 10 short films to a paying audience. This was the birth of modern Cinema and took the art of moving pictures from the experimental stage to prove its commercial viability. The ten short silent films were The Lumiere Factory Exit in Lyon more commonly known as Workers leaving the (Lumiere) factory, Acrobatics, Goldfish Fishing, The Landing of the Photography Congress in Lyon, The Blacksmiths, The Gardener (famous comic moment with a hosepipe), The Baby’s Meal, The Jump to Cover, The Place des Cordeliers Lyon, The Sea (swimming in the sea). The site is now the Sofitel Scribe Hotel who remain proud of their role in the development of modern cinema. The model shown here is a recreation of the famous event on display at the Lumière Museum in Lyon.
