On 5 March 1936, the Supermarine Spitfire made its first flight from Southampton Airport. Test pilot Joseph ‘Mutt’ Summers flew prototype K5054 for eight minutes, famously remarking: “Don’t change a thing.” The aircraft went on to become an iconic fighter of the Second World War and a symbol of British aviation.
To mark the 90th anniversary, Southampton Airport was designated a World Origin Site. The “Spitfire 90” event featured a city-wide celebration, including two Spitfires landing on the original 1936 runway and a plaque unveiling by J. Willgoose Esq. Our team also created an Augmented Reality experience of the National Spitfire Memorial, allowing guests to view the future sculpture on-site.
