DETAILS:
The New Inn was opened on 17th October 1825 at the same time as the Coal and Lime Depot on the Yarm Branch line of the Stockton & Darlington Railway (World’s First).
It was built by Thomas Meynell, chairman of the S&DR, to serve the Yarm Branch line and the people using it, along with a “smithy” and stables to service the horse and carts that came to the depot to distribute coal from the depot locally.
As such it was the World’s First Railway pub and what Historic England call a “proto-station”, as the concept of a Railway Station as we know it today, did not yet exist.
