The awards were the brainchild of Louis B. Mayer who wanted to unite the five different sectors of the film industry. The first Academy Awards ceremony was held in the Blossom Room which is still used for prestigious events today. The awards had already been announced and the whole ceremony took little more than 15 minutes at the end of a private dinner. Douglas Fairbanks Senior hosted the event and the film Wings won two awards including Outstanding Picture.
